Set of 12: Flower Fairies

The Flower Fairies are a set of playing cards that include character designs that reflect both the shape and personality of the four suits. Each fairy is based on a flower that looks like either a heart, spade, diamond or clover, and each suit was assigned a color. All of the Jacks wield the sword, all of the Queens have a fan and all the kings have wands. The King of Hearts follows the motif of the suicide king, like an actual card set. The project was designed in Illustrator and then cut out of paper with the use of a Cricut and Cardstock paper.

Process

Starts as a sketch on paper. Gets pose, details and shapes.

Then the digital sketch comes in, keeping the separation of shapes.

After more refining and details, the final digital sketch is created. Separation of shapes, colors and materials are established.

To finish, every part is cut out, glued together, arranged, and elevated with foam pieces before being photographed.

Cut Paper Process

The process for this project and all of the projects from this

Workshop class was to sketch out the designs on paper, then render them in Illustrator so that each part was a separate piece. Once every shape is separated, a new cut file is set up with each asset arranged by color, then that file gets sent to a Cricut machine. All of the shapes are cut out, organized by color and then glued together. To get shadows on the backing, the characters, letters and suits are attached with raised foam pieces.
